About Snow GlobesSnow globes have many names: blizzard-weights, glitter domes, glitter globes, snow domes, snow globes, water balls, water domes, water globes. They are transparent globes or domes, traditionally glass, filled with water, and containing miniature figurines or scenes. A globe shape magnifies the size of the objects inside. When the globe is shaken, minute particles of white 'snow' or glitter float through the water like a miniature snow storm.
Snow globes first appeared in Europe in the late 19th Century, and were probably offshoots of the solid glass paperweight globes popular at that time. Snow globes started to catch on in America in the 1920s, and were often souvenirs. Plastic snow globes started to be manufactured in the 1950s, and were often cheap and tacky. By the 1970s, collectibles manufacturers were producing upscale snow globes, many with intricate designs, lights, action, music, and even motion detectors.
